WRIGHT MILLS AWARD (FINALIST)Between its founding in 1966 and its formal end in 1980, the Black Panther Party blazed a distinctive trail in American political culture. The Black Panthers are most often remembered for their revolutionary rhetoric and militant action. Here Alondra Nelson deftly recovers an indispensable but lesser-known aspect of the organization's broader struggle for social justice: health care. The Black Panther Party's health activism--its network of free health clinics, its campaign to raise awareness about genetic disease, and its challenges to medical discrimination--was an expression of its founding political philosophy and also a recognition that poor blacks were both underserved by mainstream medicine and overexposed to its harms.Drawing on extensive historical research as well as interviews with former members of the Black Panther Party, Nelson argues that the Party's focus on health care was both practical and ideological. Building on a long tradition of medical self-sufficiency among African Americans, the Panthers' People's Free Medical Clinics administered basic preventive care, tested for lead poisoning and hypertension, and helped with housing, employment, and social services. In 1971, the party launched a campaign to address sickle-cell anemia. In addition to establishing screening programs and educational outreach efforts, it exposed the racial biases of the medical system that had largely ignored sickle-cell anemia, a disease that predominantly affected people of African descent. The Black Panther Party's understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race. That legacy--and that struggle--continues today in the commitment of health activists and the fight for universal health care. 3D-Printing Tools from Martian Dust Will One Day Help Us One of the many challenges of colonizing Mars is that the planet is lacking many of the natural resources we rely on here on Earth Well need to bring as much of Black Panthers 50 Years Later: What They Wanted - EBONY Black Panthers 50 Years Later: What They Wanted Is What We (Still) Need Two generations ago a group of young people stood up and demanded education housing food US News Latest National News Videos & Photos - ABC Sections; Top Stories; Watch; US International; Politics; Lifestyle; Entertainment; Virtual Reality; Health; Tech; Investigative; Sports; Weather; Shows Shows AXScom - Official Tickets and Your Source for Live The AXS Cookie Policy This website like most others uses cookies in order to give you a great online experience By continuing to use our website you accept to our Black Panther Party Wikipdia Black Panther Party: Prsentation; Fondateurs: Huey P Newton Bobby Seale: Fondation: 15 octobre 1966: Disparition: 1982: Position: Extrme gauche: Idologie The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates - The Atlantic The Case for Reparations Two hundred fifty years of slavery Ninety years of Jim Crow Sixty years of separate but equal Thirty-five years of racist housing policy Communities Voices and Insights - Washington Times Hinkle said "God created all of reality It all belongs to him Government is one of only three institutions that he ordained and there is no way that you can make The State Department Wants 5 Years of Social Media Handles The effort to use social media to vet immigrants and refugees is part of the extreme vetting overhaul Trump has promised his base in order to block terrorists CC Sabathia Says Every Black Player Expects Racist Taunts Orioles outfielder Adam Jones says Red Sox fans shouted racist insults at him in Fenway Park last night and some of the dumbest people in sports media have spent the Black Panther Party - Wikipedia Almighty Black P Stone Nation; Black Guerrilla Family; Black Liberation Army; Black Panther Party; Black Power gang; Black Radical Congress; Black Revolutionary
